Ironworkers Boss Scott Merritt Faces Criminal Sentencing

Scott Merritt is now the former Treasurer for the Ironworkers Local 470 in Jamestown, New York. Back in April of 2020, he was charged and pleaded guilty to embezzling money from union coffers all on the same day. You can read more on the initial charges and guilty plea here.

Then on August 18, 2021, he faced his sentencing. He must now serve two years of probation as well as 100 hours of community service. In addition, he will also have to pay back what he allegedly stole.

From the Department of Labor:

In the United States District Court for the Western District of New York, Scott Merritt, former Treasurer of Ironworkers Local 470 (located in Jamestown, N.Y.), was sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service. He was also ordered to pay restitution of $50,850 and a $100 special assessment. On April 22, 2021, Merritt pleaded guilty to one count of embezzling union funds, in violation of 29 U.S.C. 501(c). The sentencing follows an investigation by the OLMS Boston-Buffalo District Office.
