NRTW Foundation starts Pgh ads

Pittsburgh Post Gazette Online, July 23, 2013

The conservative National Right To Work Foundation is starting a decent-sized ad buy in the Pittsburgh market today that warns of union harassment in hospital work places.

UPDATE: The NRTW takes issue with the headline of this post calling it “anti-union.” It is rather against workers being forced to join them. From a spokesman:

Polls consistently show that 75-80 percent of Americans (including union members) support the idea that union dues and union membership should be completely voluntary. If we are “anti-union” for believing that, then so are a majority of union members in America: http://www.nrtw.org/en/press/2010/11/luntz-union-member-poll-11012010

U.S. Auto Industry Booms in Right-to-Work South

National Review Online, July 25, 2013

*Note:  KY is NOT a Right to Work state!

All three top states have right-to-work laws, which prohibit employers from barring non-unionized workers, tending to weaken unions substantially. Longtime auto-industry capital and United Auto Workers stronghold Michigan passed a right-to-work measure late last year.

Detroit: Empire of Rust-How the UAW killed Packard, and Detroit

National Review Online, July 25, 2013

This is the story of how a city came to depend too much on one industry, and how one union took over the industry and therefore the town, killing both in the process.

Illinois is not competitive. The evidence is clear:

Northwest Herald Online, July 25, 2013

• According to an annual study conducted by United Van Lines, Illinois’ out-migration ranking was first in the nation in 2011 – the year of the massive income-tax increases for individuals and businesses. In 2012, we ranked No. 2 – just behind New Jersey, which had just been whacked by Hurricane Sandy.

Growth starts with making Maine competitive

Bangor Daily News ONline, July 24, 2013

We all want a robust economy. I have never met a Mainer who is opposed to improving our economy. The disagreement comes when we talk about how to accomplish that.

However, most Mainers agree that a thriving private sector plays a critical role in achieving a strong and healthy economy. Can you imagine a booming economy led by mostly failing companies? It just doesn’t happen.

According to a new analysis by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Wisconsin public employee unions have seen tens of thousands of members withdraw from their ranks since Gov. Scott Walker signed Act 10 into law in June of 2011.

Chicago “Works to Rule†on Union

Education Intelligence Agency Online, July 25, 2013

There is a lot of heartburn about the most recent round of Chicago school employee layoffs. Of course, once the decision was made to shut down 50 schools, there wasn’t much doubt that a commensurate number of layoffs would follow. While there will continue to be battles between Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Teachers Union, some outlets – particularly the leftist In These Times – are very upset about how the layoffs were carried out.

Senate compromise may embolden agency power grabs, a mistake in a fragile economy

Detroit News Online, July 24, 2013

After a row over filibusters, the “nuclear option†and other procedural puzzles, the U.S. Senate recently found political compromise and approved seven of President Barack Obama’s political appointees. But behind the parliamentary warfare was the fate of the National Labor Relations Board, an independent agency that polices workplace fair labor standards — and a key instrument in the Obama administration’s pro-union regulatory agenda.

Labor vs. ObamaCare

Wall Street Journal Online, July 23, 2013

Many construction workers and other unionized employees rely on multi-employer insurance plans to provide continuity of coverage in industries where job turnover is high and employment is often intermittent. Like other union leaders, Mr. O’Sullivan worries that ObamaCare will raise the relative cost of this type of insurance and lead businesses to offload workers onto subsidized government plans.
