Right to Work Crossfire

The National Right to Work Committee has launched a $100,000 ad campaign pushing Republicans to rescind the very first concession they made: consigning a right-to-work bill to a summer study committee.

Even before the walkout, Governor Daniels had urged Republicans not to advance the bill outlawing mandatory union dues, arguing the GOP hadn’t campaigned on it, and accurately warning it could disrupt the legislative session.

The impasse was first sparked by a so-called “right-to-work” bill that Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels had warned could derail other proposals, but that bill is now dead. The National Right to Work Committee and its Indiana affiliate announced Tuesday a newspaper ad campaign urging Daniels and Republicans to revive the issue. Democrats said they trust Republicans who have assured them the issue will not be resurrected, but said the campaign reflects mounting pressure from the right.

But the NRTW says Daniels and Bosma have fallen down on the job, after pressure from unions and their allies in the Democratic party. Five weeks ago, 39 of the 40 Democrats in the state House fled to Illinois, denying the majority Republicans the quorum they need to pass any legislation and shutting down the right to work bill. Daniels called on Republicans to drop the right to work bill, in order to bring the Democrats home, and they obliged.

Republicans also are being targeted by groups that have been allies. The National Right to Work Committee and the Indiana Right to Work Committee say they are launching a media campaign to push Daniels and legislative leaders to let the right-to-work bill come up for a vote. That legislation would bar unions and companies from negotiating contracts that impose representation fees on nonmembers.
