Doubling the minimum wage makes an unhappy meal

Washington Times Online,  August 18, 2013

The Service Employees International Union has joined the usual coterie of community agitators to unionize employees of fast-food restaurants. For the past few months, union-backed fast-food workers have been staging what they call “impromptu†(albeit highly orchestrated) wildcat strikes for higher wages, mostly in New York and other big cities.

Labor’s anti-Snyder campaign makes case for right to work

The Detroit News, August 20, 2013

“Many AFL-CIO rank and file members in those six states approve of the job being done by those governors, yet their union will use those workers’ dues to engage in an extremely partisan fight not supported by those workers,†says Terry Bowman, a United Autoworkers Union member and founder of Union Conservatives, a non-profit organization opposed to Big Labor’s one-party agenda.

NY and CA Lead List of States Americans Want To Get Their Money Out Of

Hit and Run Blog, August 21, 2013

There’s been a lot of buzz in recent years about California hemorrhaging residents, businesses and money to other states. A 2012 Manhattan Institute study found that the state lost 3.4 million residents over 22 years. As Steven Greenhut  wrote for Reason at the time, “Business owners talk not just about the costs, but about harassment by myriad government tax and regulatory agencies that often treat them like criminals. Freedom is on the decline as government gains more authority to micromanage virtually everything.”

Second, the local affiliate of the Las Vegas Culinary Union, UNITE HERE Local 26,  made it tough for them when it came to the licensing of a marquee fighter. The Massachusetts State Athletic Commission, like most state athletic commissions, requires professional fighters to obtain a state license before they participate in their bout. It’s usually a pretty rubber stamp affair. You give us money, we give you our state blessing, you go pound a dude in the face. This time the union, along with a handful of its like-minded allies, tried to block the licensing of the trashtalking Sonnen just nine days before the fight. He was a perfect target because of a money laundering conviction and his usage of testosterone replacement therapy. After hearing complaints from the union and the National Organization for Women,  the commission voted unanimously to license Sonnen anyway, saying, “the decision followed the recommendation of their Medical Advisory Board which considered Sonnen’s physical condition and medical information.

Federal Judge Rules Food Stamp Recipients Can Unionize

RealclearPolitics, August 22, 2013

“For too long so-called Food Stamp beneficiaries have been denied access to union representation seeking to protect their rights,” said Justice Gavin Moore Freestuff. In a sharply worded rebuke to attorneys representing the National Taxpayers Union, which sought to block a ruling by the newly reconstituted National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Justice Freestuff cited recent court precedents establishing the right of home health care workers, nannies, babysitters, and dog walkers to pay compulsory dues which unions could then use to influence elections.

Costa Mesa Mayor Suing Police Association, Labor Law Firm for Alleged Intimidation, Harassment

Hit and Run Blog, August 22, 2013

Now Righeimer has  filed suit against the Costa Mesa police association and its former legal firm (they were dismissed shortly after the private investigator was exposed as having filed a false police report) in what some local legal experts called a “very unusual†move. But the treatment Righeimer alleges in his lawsuit isn’t. As Steven Greenhut reported when the DUI incident first happened  last August:

Fight Against ‘Right-to-Work’ Not Over in Michigan

In These Times, August 22, 1953

Another plaintiff in that suit, United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 6000, represents about 17,500 Michigan government workers. One UAW official, who asked to remain anonymous so he could discuss the case candidly, said that the state Supreme Court’s Republican leanings will make persuading its justices to overrule the Court of Appeals a “difficult task.†The official noted that, like the Michigan Court of Appeals, Republican governors appointed the majority of the state Supreme Court justices.
