Meet Erik Montague: The 2025 Applegate-Jackson-Parks Future Teacher Scholarship Winner!

The National Institute for Labor Relations Research (NILRR) is thrilled to announce Erik Montague as the 2025 winner of the prestigious Applegate-Jackson-Parks Future Teacher Scholarship! Selected from over 300 inspiring applicants, Erik’s passion for education and bold vision for change have earned him this distinguished honor.

Named after three courageous Michigan teachers—Carol Applegate, Kay Jackson, and Dr. Anne Parks—who stood firm against forced union dues, this scholarship celebrates educators who champion Right to Work principles and unwavering dedication to their craft. These principles empower workers to choose whether to join or support a union without risking their jobs, fostering freedom and fairness in the workplace.

Erik’s Journey: A Beacon of Excellence

A graduate of the University of Montana, Erik is a double-degree powerhouse, earning Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and Theatre with High Honors and the coveted University Scholar title from the Honors College. This fall, he’s taking his talents to George Fox University in Oregon, where he’ll pursue a Master’s degree in education at a renowned Christian liberal arts institution known for its innovative programs.

A Vision for Change

Erik’s winning essay is a game-changer. He boldly advocates for voluntary unionization in public schools, arguing that freeing teachers from compulsory dues will spark a revolution in education—higher pay, top-tier educators, and vibrant school communities. His words pulse with a deep belief in the power of Right to Work liberties to transform classrooms and empower teachers to thrive.

A Legacy of Impact

The Applegate-Jackson-Parks Scholarship, awarded annually by National Institute for Labor Relations Research, supports education students who embody professional excellence and a commitment to workplace freedom. Erik’s award will directly support his studies at George Fox, fueling his mission to shape the future of education.

From the Institute’s Board: “Erik Montague’s vision and dedication inspire us all. Congratulations, Erik, on this well-deserved honor! We can’t wait to see the incredible impact you’ll make as an educator.”
