State Sen. President Steve Sweeney will remain at the helm of an embattled Philadelphia ironworkers union for likely another year, he said this week, following the Jan. 20 conviction and pending sentencing of its former leader on corruption and arson charges.

Sweeney, a longtime union official for Ironworkers International who represents the Third Legislative District in Trenton, was appointed to oversee Ironworkers Local 401 following the February 2014 indictment of its business manager and treasurer Joseph Dougherty, its city business agent Edward Sweeney and 10 other members.

Other states are showing the way to increase manufacturing, with the adoption of Right to Work Laws. Right to Work simply means workers have the freedom to choose whether to pay union dues or not. It has paid dividends of jobs in states that have adopted them. Between 2009 and 2014, manufacturing jobs have increased 2 percent, and manufacturing wages are up 5 percent in Right to Work states while manufacturing jobs and wages fell 3 percent in states without Right to Work laws (according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

If anyone had a question about how the National Labor Relations Board decision on Specialty Healthcare and the recent implementation of the Ambush Election regulation would play out, we got an answer today. Today the NLRB released a decision on four cases involving Nestle Waters. The company has gone from having no petitions filed on April 13, to four petitions in four facilities filed in California on April 15. The petitioned bargaining units were contested to the Regional Director and ruled on today, May 5th. The elections in each of the four petitioned units will occur on Friday – this Friday, May 8th, just three weeks after the employer received the petitions.

The second amendment that would put tax dollars to better use was authored by Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), and would prohibit Davis-Bacon prevailing wage requirements for projects funded by the bill.

Simply, the two amendments intent was to end special interest giveaways and require tax dollars to be for the public good. Unfortunately, the below Republicans voted in favor of supporting the private interests of labor unions instead of the American public.

It reads, in part:  “Some examples of violations of this restriction are (1) selling the list to telemarketers, (2) providing it to a political campaign, or (3) using the list to harass, coerce, or rob employees.â€
